   Dear Worcester Members:  I hope this finds you getting out there to
enjoy the finest of summer.  Summer is flying fast and it's hard to
believe children and teachers will be returning soon to school.  Make
the most of August by joining other like-minded members on upcoming
events listed below.  Our chapter is in full swing offering paddle and
camping trips, bike rides twice a week, volleyball, social events,
family adventure club, and Mid State Trail and photography hikes.  If
you don't see something you would like to do, consider leading an
activity for us.  We welcome new leaders and new members!  Check out
all the fun we have with all our photos posted online
http://amcworcester.org/pix/index.htm[1].

Summer is the time we begin our recruiting process for finding
replacements for our resigning activities coordinators, also known as
chairpeople.  We have a variety of openings on our Executive Committee
(EC).  The EC is responsible for major decisions,
organizing events, and leading the chapter.  Volunteer commitments are
generally one year.  Duties include one monthly meeting per month,
approving activities through our on-line listings and representing the
chapter as needed.  Time commitments depending on
the position are usually only a few hours a week primarily online.
Please consider getting involved at the chapter level and give back to
the AMC on a local level.  If you know of somebody you can recommend,
please contact Jim Walsh at hikerjim502 at yahoo.com[2] by Wednesday as
the nominations committee will be meeting.  The following
positions /MAY/ be available:

  * WebMaster
  * Treasurer
  * Programs
  * Paddling
  * Skiing
  * Trails
  * Public Relations
  * Leadership

The Worcester Chapter is proud to have joined forces with the Greater
Worcester Land Trust to protect the local parks and open space. We
have formed many partnerships both in non-profit organizations
following the same mission as well as retail organizations.  A retail
organization has recently provided our volunteers a 40% discount
online for outdoor gear.  If you are a volunteer and wish to learn
more about how you can receive the  discount, contact me and I will
send you the information. Also consider getting on EMS's database as
they offer a variety of programs and great discounts to members.  New
England Backpacker also provides discounts to AMC members.

   This month we enjoyed a couple well attended outdoor social
activities for our 3rd Wed potluck at Broadmeadow Brook Audubon
Society and the BBQ/Paddle Party at the YMCA Camp Harrington.  A great
time had by all the smiling faces.  Thanks to those who attended. We
will be hosting another BBQ August 29 so please join us. Save the date!

   Special thanks to the Fanjoys who led the families hike up Mount
Monadnock on a spectacular Saturday.  Several groups of families
enjoyed their first big mountain experience with outstanding views.  I
am hosting a families adventure camp for weekly activities for kids
ages 6+.   Looking for something to do with the kids in WR county,
sign up to be on our e-list by sending me an email to
barbaradyer at hotmail.com[3].   Our chapter is also starting a chapter
youth program (CYP).  We welcome youth agencies to partner with us as
we provide free volunteer leadership to make sure "no child is left
inside".  Contact Deb Phaup to get involved at dphaup at verizon.net[4].

   On a personal note, my family and I enjoyed a fantastic cross
country trip visiting the West Coast and Southwest. We visited some of
the top places listed in the most recent Life magazine.  From
California Dreaming to the Rocky Mountain High. We traveled 2000 miles
through six western states exploring deserts, canyons, forests,
mountains, national parks and monuments, Navajo lands, ghost and
mining towns, and world famous beaches.   A summer to remember for
sure!

   Another exciting adventure was with the 16th annual inter-chapter
ladies huts hike.   This year 17 adventurous women hit the Whites from
Greenleaf Hut to Lonesome Lake to the Highland Center enjoying some
great views, waterfalls, and high peaks. I personally extend the
invite for families to join my kids and I and other families at
Lonesome Lake Hut Aug 14-16.  The huts are a great way to enjoy AMC at
its finest.  No cooking, a bed, and great social opportunity awaits.
An excellent retreat for families!

   Wishing you many happy trails this summer and some fond memories of
your own to cherish.  I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming
events.  All are welcome! Please don't hesitate to contact me for any
chapter related inquiries.

   Happy Trails,

   Barbara Dyer/Chapter Chair barbaradyer at hotmail.com[5] or (508)735-3281
