July 07

Happy Summer Members!

Summer is officially here and a great time to "Get Out There" and
enjoy Worcester county at its finest and join in on all the activities
our chapter is offering including paddling, July 4 cookout,
volleyball, trail work, family outings, hiking, biking, socials, and
so much more. Check out our website at www.amcworcester.org
frequently as it is updated weekly.

Welcome new members and thanks to all who support us. Our membership
is growing on average of 50 new members per month. That says a lot
about who we are! However we want to hear from those too who select
to no longer be a member and ask that you share some thoughts with us
on how to improve the chapter. We're always open for suggestions and
trying to make change based on comments from our local members.
Feedback is always encouraged and welcomed.

This month has been full of exciting opportunities. National Trails
Day at Mt. Wachusett was a huge success with over 25 in attendance.
Special thanks to Mt. Wachusett for providing lunch to all our hard
workers and to all who worked so hard on the trails. Be sure to see
our photos online at http://amcworcester.org/pix/index.htm. Great job
Steve Crowe, Don Hoffses, and Dwayne Erikson for organizing the annual
event! The annual solstice hike was a sold out crowd on a picture
perfect evening.

Our new member beginner hikes are well attended so new members
consider joining in on the fun and be sure to go to our potluck and
new member orientation every 3rd Wed. We are also offering a new
"Walk in the Park" series exploring our state parks especially
designed for families and beginner hikers and cyclists.

I spent 3 days in the White Mountains with a mountain classroom trip
from Ayer Middle School. Thirteen 6th graders enjoyed staying at the
Highland Center and Mizpah Hut and learned about leadership, teamwork,
bio-diversity, geology, geography, astronomy and so much more. Thanks
to the Worcester Chapter for subsidizing their trip of a lifetime.

Kicking off this summer is the new "Family Adventure Camp" open to all
families interested in connecting with one another in the Worcester
County area for bike riding, hiking, swimming and inexpensive trips
locally. Kids need kids to enjoy outside to the fullest and this is
an excellent opportunity for families to get outside mid-week so "no
child is left inside" this summer! Please join us as there are several
weekend trips offered this month hiking Monadnock, Hopkinton State
Park and Tully Lake Camping.

Leaders are reminded that all entries for the Sept. issue should be
entered by July 10. Thanks for all you do to keep our chapter going.
Please consider leading a favorite fall hike or bike ride for us.

Our newsletter will be arriving shortly so members stay tuned. We
love to share member's adventures and you will surely enjoy this
incoming issue with paddling and biking around the country stories.
Thanks to Mary MacDonald and Lori Nozzolillo for their outstanding
efforts.

Mary MacDonald should also be recognized for organizing the second of
the series "Urban Park Cleanups". Thanks to all of those who stepped
up to the plate and assisted in the cleanup in Worcester. This is an
ongoing series and we try to encourage and inspire you to give back a
few hours to your local community. Please consider joining us again
in August date TBD.

Congratulations to our volunteer of the month, David Miller. Thanks
David for all you do for our paddling committee over the years. Most
recently David led a canoe camping trip and consistently leads monthly
paddle trips. All nominees are entered into a drawing for a free
weekend at any AMC destination. Also nominated this month were our
young members Tim Smith and Justin Savage. Keep up the good work
guys! We appreciate all you do. Please consider nominating a special
volunteer for their outstanding efforts and send to
barbaradyer at hotmail.com by July 25.

Our nominations process will soon be open and we are seeking
candidates in the following positions on our executive committee for a
one year commitment starting in November. Possible vacancies are
Vice-Chair, Leadership Chair, Programs, Treasurer, Webmaster, Paddling
Chair, Ski Chair, and PR. If you have ever considered joining a team
of talented and dedicated outdoor enthusiasts who proudly follow the
mission of the AMC, please contact our nominations chair Jim Walsh at
hikerjim502 at yahoo.com for more information. All are welcome and new
members are especially encouraged to get involved at the chapter
level. Training is provided and experience in some positions not
required.

Calling all runners! The Greenway Challenge is just around the corner
on September 29th and our AMC team needs runners to run approx. 5.5
miles. Please join the fun on this 3rd annual AMC event led by Mary
MacDonald mmacdona at comcast.net. Speed not necessary, just an ability
to be part of a team and have fun on this special day. For more
details on the GC visit http://www.greenwaychallenge.org/.

On a personal note, I am excited to share my big summer adventure with
you as I will be going this month to our Western National Parks,
Canyons, Vegas, while visiting Nevada, Colorado, Utah, Arizona and
California beaches. A trip of my lifetime indeed! Upon my return,
I'll be joining the 16th annual "Ladies Hut Hike" trip up to Greenleaf
and Lonesome Lake huts and spending some additional time volunteering
at Lonesome Lake with my kids. Families - please consider joining me
at Lonesome August 14-16 or on the "Families Fun Weekend" at Noble
View in Western MA from August 3-5 or on the midweek "Family Adventure
Club". All are welcome!

Wishing you all the best this summer with many adventures and safe journeys!

Happy Trails,
