Subject: Adopt-a-Park volunteer opportunity reminder for tomorrow
Hey gang,
The weather is beautiful - not too hot, and not too cold, and no bugs.
What better weather than to put on your grubby clothes and come help
clean up a park in our home center of Worcester tomorrow morning. Here
are the details from the website:
Sat., September 22. #4 Urban Park Cleanup Series. Status: Open.
Adopt-A-City-Park Series Morning Fun/Work time in Worcester. Volunteers
needed to help "clean up our own backyard." at Tacoma Street Park in
cooperation with the Great Worcester Land Trust Project. Tools and
protective gloves supplied. Dress for weather. Leader: Mary MacDonald,
mmacdona at comcast.net.
We chose Tacoma Street Park because of its "endangered species" status
as a public park in Worcester. As you may remember, Barb Dyer
forwarded us this letter, (copied below), from Colin of the Great
Worcester Land Trust back in June. We decided Tacoma Park was a worthy
cause for the AMC to support. It is important that we help to conserve
land for recreation. This parcel was already conserved, but is at risk
of being sold by the city. The Worcester chapter notified Colin that
we would join the Worcester Conservation Advocacy Group for this
endeavor. Our Adopt-a-Park clean-up is one of the ways we at the AMC
can show our support in a meaningful way.
Some of you have already signed on. Thanks to the rest of you for
considering joining us tomorrow. Please email the leader if you plan
to attend, so Mary will know how much equipment to bring.

[Barb - I don't have the greater membership list to send this
reminder/suggestion/request chapter-wide, so if you think it
appropriate, would you please forward the first two paragraphs of this
message.]
====================
Dear Worcester Chapter AMC President Barbara Dyer,
My name is Colin Novick and I am the Executive Director of the
Greater Worcester Land Trust. I am writing on behalf of an ad hoc
coalition of organizations, the Worcester Conservation Advocacy Group,
to inquire as to whether or not the AMC Worcester Chapter is willing or
able to take an advocacy position with regards to the redisposition and
sale of parkland in the City of Worcester. It may be obvious but to be
clear we oppose the redisposition of dedicated parks, and conservation
lands. To date a group of local Worcester Conservation, Watershed, and
Recreation organizations have weighed in on this matter including:
bi-state Blackstone Coalition
Blackstone Headwaters Coalition
Greater Worcester Land Trust
Green Hill Park Coalition
Massachusetts Audubon Society, and
Park Spirit
Were this a matter that the Worcester AMC Chapter would be willing
to consider I have a Worcester City Council Package (PDF) describing
the proposal, two diagrams representing the proponents development
(Image Files), and a unified position letter that we have signed on to
(RTF). I would be happy to send these along, but as they are
attachments I do not want to send you anything unless you would be
interested in it, expecting it, and able to receive it.
Please know that the long history of the Worcester AMC Chapter
places a special importance on the positions and stances taken by your
group, and that the AMC is founded on a principle of preserving
conservation lands. It seemed right to reach out and ask for your
consideration. Thank you for your time and attention. Let me know if
either you or another Worcester AMC Chapter representative would be
interested in this issue.
Sincerely,
Colin M.J. Novick
Executive Director
Greater Worcester Land Trust
on behalf of
Worcester Conservation Advocacy Group
