Dear Jen,

You may want to check out a great sustainable development conference and a
series of events set to celebrate Massachusetts state parks this month.

You can find out how you can help encourage sustainable development by
attending the Smart Growth Conference in Boston on May 9.

You can also participate in the Great Park Pursuit, a team adventure
challenge, by bringing your family and friends out to Massachusetts state
parks on six consecutive Saturdays, starting May 19.

*Smart Growth Conference: A Citizen's Tool Kit*

 Wed. 9 May 2007, 7-9p - AMC HQ - 3 Joy St., Boston MA

Ever notice how much traffic there is nowadays, and how your favorite green
places seem to be disappearing faster than you can say "condo"? Ever wonder
what we ordinary citizens can do about it? Wonder no more.

On the evening of May 9, the Appalachian Mountain Club is slated to host a
forum featuring four experts in the field of sustainable development,
otherwise referred to as "smart growth."

We'll start with a presentation on smart growth statewide and discuss how
the Patrick administration might contribute to such efforts. We'll also take
a look at what state planners have in store for the Boston area, and then
get personal and local as two top-notch speakers share their best strategies
for managing the growth in your town and at the end of your street. (See
List of Panelists)

The evening's emphasis will be on practical, "how-to" information that
ordinary citizens can take home and put right to work. Speakers'
presentations will be followed by an ample question and answer session
which, in turn, will be followed by refreshments and further opportunities
for questions and networking.

Doors open at 6 PM for registration, refreshments, and the chance to browse
tables staffed by various local organizations promoting smart growth.

*Great Park Pursuit*

This spring, as part of a national No Child Life Inside initiative, the
Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is challenging
children and their families to disconnect from their computers and reconnect
with nature, becoming healthier as they enjoy active outdoor recreation in
our state parks.

We would like to invite you to join us in kicking off this initiative with
The Great Park Pursuit, a team adventure challenge activity that will bring
families to state parks on six consecutive Saturdays, from May 19 to June
23. Participants will enjoy a variety of recreational and nature-based
learning activities, including hiking, fishing, canoeing, questing, and
learning about birds of prey, and registrants who take part in all six
events will be eligible to win major outdoor equipment prizes donated by
Eastern Mountain Sports. The first Great Park Pursuit event will be held on
May 19 at the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton, and, similar to some outdoor
adventure "reality-TV" programs, clues will be provided to registered
participants about the location of the following week's event.
