RUSSELL, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) A state police helicopter hovered over two
lost hikers, stranded in the dark in Russell Friday night. The man and woman
went for a hike on "Noble View Camp" property around 3 o'clock Friday
afternoon, and were too deep in the woods to find their way out when the sun
went down. They called for help around six, sparking the search. They were
located an hour later with the help of the state police helicopter, cell
phones, and Russell firefighters on all terrain vehicles. 22News was the
only local television station there as the ATV's brought them out about an
hour later.... a little cold, but none the worse for the wear.
The big lesson here: hike earlier in the day when there's lots of light and
carry water and a flashlight.
